New Years Resolutions

If your home decor leaves a lot to be desired, why not make a resolution to change things up in 2019? Whether it be an extensive home remodeling project or just a new paint color, changing things up can be the perfect way to breathe new life into your home for the 2019. Just be sure to avoid these common home decorating mistakes so you don’t inadvertently sabotage your investment in new design.

  • Going overboard on the knick-knacks. Everyone loves cute home décor accents and accessories, but a little goes a long way when it comes to decorating with them. Too many accessories will make it look cluttered and haphazard instead of stylish. Limit yourself to a few key pieces that are your favorites, vary their size and height to give your display a more balanced look.

  • Using too many patterns. Throw pillows, rugs, curtains and even wallpaper in trendy patterns and prints can bring a lot of interest to your living space, but multiple patterns in the same space can make the room seem too busy. A good rule of thumb - use no more than three fabric patterns at a time. Try using an area rug with a fluid print to anchor the room, then add one or two geometric or earthy patterns along with a solid print in an interesting texture.

  • Overwhelming your space with furniture. Cramming too much furniture in a room will do nothing more than make it feel small and cramped. If you have a room overflowing with furniture, identify the pieces you use the most, then work on scaling back what remains. Try repurposing some of the pieces by moving them to other areas of the house, or sell some of your least favorite items to buy something you really love. If you have pieces of furniture that hold sentimental value, consider passing them on to another family member.
